Events by the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency on culture-arts, cultural heritage, urban implementations and urban culture keep on embracing Istanbul residents.
This week in the Agenda of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture:
Opening of the Port of Art
Istanbul 2010 ECOC Agency is making an ‘Istanbul 2010 ECOC Port of Art’ out of the warehouse 5 in Tophane for gaining a venue for exhibitions to be held in Istanbul. Opening will be realized on June 19 with four international exhibitions.
Two stairs of 3.600 m2 are renewed with technical and aesthetical aspects at warehouse 5 in Tophane to comply .with contemporary exhibition standards. Allocated by the Ministry of Transportation to the use of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency until the end of 2010, the Port of Art will host exhibitions approved by the Agency.
The warehouse #5 is making its debut as the Port of Art with four international exhibitions. Simultaneously with the Southeast European Cooperation Process (SEECP) Summit to be held in Istanbul at the end of June, the exhibition “Beyond Credit – Modern Art and Mutual Trust” will present examples of modern art prevailing in the region.
Prepared within the context of the Portable Art project by the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency Visual Arts Directorate, the exhibitions named "Gratuitous" and “Little Land Fish” will be on display as well during the opening together with the exhibition “Istanbul Otherwise” where beads, demitasse, beşi bir yerde (ornamental coin worth five Turkish gold pounds), faldstool, Turkish delight case, hamam set and shoeshine box are interpreted in the light of the “cultural sustainability” concept and reshaped as contemporary items by seven Turkish designers.
The Tokyo Ballet Show
Carried out by the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency Performing Arts Directorate to keep the pulse of dance in Istanbul till the end of 2010, the ‘Dance Platform Istanbul welcomes one of the greatest ballets groups of the world, Tokyo Ballet.
Making their 23rd world tour with 689 international performances, the Tokyo Ballet will embrace Istanbul audience at Cemal Reşit Rey on Saturday, June 19 at 20:00.
Pina Bausch "Nefes" Dance Show
Within the context of the project “Pina Bausch’s Istanbul” realized jointly by Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency Theatre and Performing Arts Directorate and Istanbul Culture & Art Foundation International Theatre Festival; renowned choreographer Pina Bausch’s project “Nefes” (a segment of “Cities and People”), which was performed also in our country before her death, will be restaged to the audience.
Inspired by Istanbul, “Nefes” will be re-performed for the occasion of Istanbul’s selection as the European Capital of Culture for 2010. This project is a dance performance, expressing Pina Baucsh’s love for Istanbul. This graceful performance, enhanced by respected musicians, including Mercan Dede, Burhan Öçal, Suren Asaduryan and Tom Waits, highlights Istanbul’s femininity, fragility, independence, spirituality and modernity.
Music of Istanbul Architecture
When music is performed and listened to at the architectural atmosphere of the time it belongs to, it gets easier to follow the integrity. In this project by the Turkish Music Foundation, concert series goes on with a Tamburi Cemil Bey tribute night to be realized at the Chalet Mansion Manege Building in Yildiz Palace on June 19 at 20:00 where Tamburi Cemil Bey –one of the most charismatic figures of Turkish music history- used to reside and make music.
