Recognising and safeguarding water heritage through the identification of the environmental issues related to water and territorial management: REMEE project implemented a Transnational Educational Programme addressed to young pupils in the schools of the Mediterranean region
The programme “Young actors for water heritage” started in September 2009 with the aim to increase primary and secondary students’ awareness of the importance of Mediterranean vernacular water heritage and its conservation.
Between September 2009 and May 2010, approximately 1.000 young students from Algeria, France, Greece, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey, were involved in educational and play activities organised by educators trained in pedagogical and methodological approaches specifically developed within the REMEE project and adopted in each of its partner countries.
Curricular and extracurricular activities included pedagogical sessions organised both in the classroom and in the field: pupils had the opportunity to meet rural communities, villagers and farmers and learn about traditional skills and techniques in water management for agriculture, to discover the heritage built around it as well as the landscape which was shaped throughout centuries of practices related to water- mills, fountains, draining galleries, tanks… -, and to become aware of the consequences that the disappearance of such traditional skills and techniques will have on the environment.
At the end of the programme, the works developed by pupils – illustrated features, videos, exhibition panels, and to-scale models, will be exhibited and shared with their families, their community and the larger public in their area:
19 May 2010: Akyaka (Turkey);
21 May 2010: Corte University (Corse, France);
25 May 2010: Vaucluse L’Isle sur la Sorgue (France);
31 May 2010: Vaucluse, “Maison du Département” of Carpentras (France);
19-20 June 2010: Syros (Greece).
