Events by the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency on culture-arts, cultural heritage, urban implementations and urban culture keep on embracing Istanbul residents.

This week in the Agenda of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture:

"Grand Sultana" Theatre Show
In the scope of “La Grand Sultana” project, to be realized jointly by State Theatres, Spanish National Theatre and Istanbul Cervantes Institute, the play titled “La Grand Sultana” by famous Mediterranean writer Cervantes, (who is better known for his novels than for his plays) will be staged in Istanbul for the first time on Wednesday, June 30 at St.Irene by 20:00.

The play, telling a story of the Ottoman palace, is based on the conflict between love and religion. In his work Cervantes defined the Ottoman culture as a “sea of tolerance” inferring different life styles and belief systems. Istanbul, European Capital of Culture for 2010, proved that it deserves this title since it has been hosting various cultures, languages, ethnic origins with extreme tolerance and unique affableness, over the centuries.

Grand Sultana is at State Theatres DT Tekel Stage on 2 - 3 - 4 July at 20:00.

1st International Istanbul Opera Festival
Countdown is going on for the 1st International Istanbul Opera Festival to be realized on 2-23 July by State Opera and Ballet of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture with support of Istanbul 2010 Europan Capital of Culture and contribution of Denizbank.

Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Bremen Opera along with State Opera and Ballets of Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya and Samsun will be staging 8 different productions on 18 performances along four weeks.

“Europe on Water” Concerts
Developed by the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency, the “Europe on Water” project will set two big stages on Taksim Gezi Park and Caddebostan coast for European countries to expose their cultures in festival air to Istanbul residents from 25 June until 9 July.
