It was officially established on December 20 in Lecce, the new Italian Centre of International Theatre Institute (ITI), the largest and most important international organization for the performing arts founded by UNESCO. For the occasion will be present in Lecce, the General Secretary of the ITI, Tobias Biancone. The International Theatre Institute, founded in Prague, 1948, by theatre and dance experts and UNESCO, is the only cultural non-governmental organization that is in formal relationship with UNESCO, present with more than 100 Nationals Centres in the world. The purpose of the International Theatre Institute is to promote international exchange of knowledge and practice in theatre arts in order to consolidate creative co-operation between operators and favour intercultural dialogue. Primary goals of the ITI are the promotion of peace through art, the support of innovative performative practices, cultural diversity enhancement and the promotion and protection of the rights of performing arts professionals.
The International Theatre Institute is promoter of important initiatives at worldwide level, such as the World Theatre Day (27 March), the International Dance Day (29 April) and the Theatre of Nations, where for the first time after the second World War, were present the Peking Opera, the Berliner Ensemble, Kabuki and the Moscow Art Theatre.
The International Theatre Institute is divided into different International Commitees and Forum: the Communication Committee (ComCom), the Committee for Cultural Identity and Development (CIDC), the Dramatic Theatre Committee (DTC), the International Dance Committee (IDC), the International Festival Forum (IFF), the International Monodrama Forum (IMF), the International Playwrights’ Forum (IPF), the Music Theatre Committee (MTC), the New Project Group (NPG), the Theatre Education and Training Committee (TECOM), the Young Practitioners’ Committee (YPC) and the Action Committee for Artists Rights (ACAR).
Fabio Tolledi, director and playwright of Astragali Teatro, is the President of the Italian Centre of the ITI, with the support of a prestigious Scientific Committee.
Among the charter members of the new Italian Centre of the ITI are present theatres and associations such as M.Th.I.-Music Theatre International (Roma), Teatro Vascello (Roma), LaMama Umbria International (Spoleto), Accademia Amiata Mutamenti (Grosseto)
