Source http://www.culturaldiplomacy.orgThe Institute for Cultural Diplomacy, Berlin, announces its International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy 2010, to be held in Berlin, Germany, 23–30 May 2010 under the title Culture, Globalization, and International Relations over the next Two Decades. The event is one of the world’s leading conferences in the fields of cultural studies and international relations. Held annually in Berlin, the event will bring together prominent figures from the fields of international politics, academia, arts, culture, and civil society to speak to an interdisciplinary audience on a variety of important issues and challenges relating to international politics and culture.
The change over the past two decades from an international system based on independent nation states to an interdependent world facing global challenges has been widely explored and analyzed. This shift has placed a higher priority on nation states working closely with one another and pursuing sustainable multilateral approaches to tackling global and regional challenges. The International Symposium 2010 will build on the foundation of these discussions by exploring the challenges that lie ahead and the complex relationship between culture, international relations, and globalization over the next two decades.
The programme will be split into three complementary parts. The first part will begin by looking in greater detail at “culture” and “identity” and how these terms are used and understood today. The second part of the program will build on these themes by considering the role that culture plays in contemporary international relations and the process of globalization. The final part, being held in cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the German Marshal Fund (GMFUS), and in partnership with leading international organizations, will apply these discussions to one of the key issues that will determine global politics over the coming years – Afghanistan and stability in Central Asia.
