European Universities Theatre Festival, coordinated by Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency Theatre and Performing Arts Directorate, starts in Istanbul and embraces Europe this year.
To be held on May 02-16, the European Universities Theatre Festival is hosting 51 university theatre groups who claim “Theatre is a MUST!” and get on the stage to meet with Istanbul audience who claims the same.
The first of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Projects the 2008 Istanbul Universities Theatre Festival was held with the participation of 22 theatre troops. The festival scope was extended over entire Turkey in 2009 with the name “Turkish Universities Theatre Festival” and now it gets to embrace European universities as well.
A total of 51 university theatre groups; 36 from Turkey, 14 from Europe and a special guest from Japan – in relation with ‘2010 Japan Year in Turkey’- will present their plays in various venues around the city; Istanbul State Theatres Stages, Nişantaşı Rüştü Uzel Stage and garajistanbul.
Surprise is a MUST!
European Universities Theatre Festival opens with a surprise performance on May 2 at Atlas Cinema Hall and continues with a colorful parade on May 3rd from Atlas Alley to the Tunnel Square accompanied by the participant university theatre groups.
Once arrived in Tunnel Square, 1st and 2nd class students of Istanbul Bilgi University Performing Arts Department will presenting their own performance called “Postmodern Traditional Turkish Comedy” in which they aim to share with the people of the city in a busy square and to explore ways of changing the perception of time and place.
Gratis is a MUST!
51 theatre shows and Istanbul 2010 International Meeting for Theatre Education Symposium which will last 2 days and 15 workshops – all events are free to enter.
Debate is a MUST!
Simultaneously with the festival a symposium called Istanbul 2010 International Meeting for Theatre Education will be held on 7-8 May with the participation of Prof. Jean-Marc Larrue the president of International Universities Theatre Association together with Turkish theatre professionals and academics including Prof. Dikmen Gürün.
Education is a MUST!
The festival will feature workshops where professional actors like Işıl Kasapoğlu, Berkun Oya, Derya Alabora, Kemal Yiğitcan, Mustafa Kaplan and Teresa Brayshaw will join for meeting the youngsters.
Target: Meeting at ‘World Universities Theatre Festival’ in 2011…
It is aimed to establish international artistic cooperation among European universities through this festival. European Universities Theatre Festival is intended to go on internationally even after 2010.
