İSTANBUL'UN SOKAK SATICILARI
İslamdan önce Kassas diye adlandırılan adamlar vardır, kıssahanlar, ozanlar vardır, meddahlar vardır İstanbul’da. Bunlar sözlü anlatı geleneğini bugüne taşırlar, kendi bedenlerinde, kendi kültürleriyle, kültürlerinde.
Kassas'ta, İstabul'da çalışan hurdacı, simitçi, macuncu, boyacı, bayrakçı, taksitçi, bozacı, nohut-pilavcı, midyeci, hallaç, kalaycı, çiçekçi, falcı, ciğerci, bileyci kısacası seyyar satıcılar oynuyor.
“Taşı toprağı altın olan İstanbul’un, taşının toprağının seyyar satıcıları bizim bu oyundaki ilham kaynağımız. Dükkanları bedenleri, bedenleri dükkanları olan seyyarlar, hikayelere tanıklık eden, hikayeler anlatan, hayatları sokak olan, yaz demeden, kış demeden çalışan seyyahlar. Ozandır bu insanlar kimi zaman, satacakları mallara hikayeler uydururlar, hikayelerini manilerle, şarkılarla, şiirle anlatırlar. Abuk sabuk hikayeler de anlatırlar zaman zaman, kıssadan hisse de.
Kalaycıdır, bozacıdır, kağıt helvacıdır, pamuk helvacıdır, börekçidir, yoğurtçudur, simitçidir, şerbetçidir, tavukpilavcıdır, bohçacıdır, geçerler.
İstanbul’u bilirler mahalle mahalle, sokak sokak.

A One-Act Variety Play
The Street Merchants of Istanbul
Before the coming of Islam, there were men called Kassas. These were the storytellers, the troubadours and the travelling bards of Istanbul. In and through their bodies and their culture, they have shouldered the tradition of storytelling down to the present day.
Among the Kassas are the actors roaming the streets of Istanbul: the scrap-iron dealers, the bread-ring sellers, the sweets-peddlers, the itinerant painters, the flag-bearers, the credit merchants, the boza sellers, the chickpea and rice sellers, the stuffed mussel sellers, the cotton and wool carders, the tinsmiths, the flower sellers, the fortune tellers, the liver peddlers and the knife grinders - to the very last one, the street merchants of the city.
“The inspiration for our play is the street rabble of Istanbul, the travelling merchants in a city where even the rubble is made of gold. These are the roamers whose shops are their bodies and their bodies are their shops. These are the street peddlers whose home is the road, merchants who toil summer and winter, swearing by the tales they tell. These folk are story-crafters who on occasion may twist the truth a bit about the goods they deal but adorn their stories with melodies, songs and poetry. At times they may drift off, prattling rambling anecdotes but also here and there they rattle off tales with a moral to tell.
They all pass by: the tinsmiths, the wafer-sellers, the sweet candy-floss peddlers, the pastry makers, the yogurt sellers, the snack-bread sellers, the fruit juice sellers, the chicken and rice peddlers, the women cloth-sellers.
They know Istanbul, from neighborhood to neighborhood and street to street, to which they belong. They trundle on their backs, on their carts and in their toy wagons a certain culture, a tradition hundreds of years old, the tradition of the tradesman, and whether you have any money or not they give it to you, loan it to you, bequeath it upon you - because they know you, they know who you are. The sound of their voices is unrivalled, the loads they carry incomparable and their faces unforgettable…
These are the street merchants, our fellow actors in this play!”
