Kunstbahnhof Dresden, 70 Trabant car rear-view mirrors in their original box (model luxury right) / 3 concave mirrors
As a symbol for a memorizing look back and the reflection of memories I am using Trabant car rear-view mirrors. Attached to an old rusty goods wagon in “Reflected back” (Chemnitz 1993) they gaze like with hundreds of eyes into my own and the German past. In “Looking backwards while going forwards” -realised in the windows of the Künstlerbahnhof Westend- the mirrors looked out onto the rails that carried transports into the concentration camps (Berlin 1994). Another time they are screwed on iron rods and sway as ”Garden of Memories” like a flowerbed in the wind (Zakopane/Berlin 1996-2009). They allow the gaze into the mirror to take unexpected directions, show the eye details that it normally does not observe, reflect the light and the surroundings and -depending on the light source- transform into the imaginary plane of a lind mirror that shows the void. Reflections, light and shadow images change into memory gardens between reality and dream.
