Since 1992, the meeting of the Committee and that of the General Assembly of the Rencontres Association of Towns and Regions of Greater Europe for Culture, have been held in the towns deemed European Capital of Cultures. After the success of the meeting organized in Avignon in 2005, the La Rencontre co-operative decided to renew the experience, and this year organized a new themed meeting: - The Meeting of Avignon, from 16 to 18 July 2009 on the theme of "European Capitals of Culture in Questions".
This meeting will bring together past, present and yet to come European Capitals of Culture at the University of Avignon, as well as the towns whose candidature was not retained.
Faced with the issues that represent the title of European Capital of Culture in terms of cultural, territorial, economic and tourist development, this meeting will provide an opportunity to carry out a common reflection on the new challenges brought up by this manifestation and on repercussions, but also on its future. It will also enable the exchange of advice and examples of good practices, concerning candidature, the selection procedure or again, the implementation of events.
